Third time lucky for Cheam Village Fair!
After 2 years of wet May bank holidays a bumper crowd of over 3000 turned out for a bright and sunny Cheam Village Fair in Cheam Recreation Ground.
With temperatures in the high 70s local families enjoyed a great day out at what was the largest event held in recent years – with more stalls and more entertainment than before. The centre arena blessed a host of local talent, with regulars Cheam Gym Club and the Carshalton Cheerleaders joined by newcomers Magic Theo, Sutton and Epsom Rugby Club and Fighting Fit Martial Arts.
As well as a funfair and the traditional side shows of Punch and Judy, Balloon Race and Coconut Shy, over thirty five local charities and organisations had stalls. Moving the location to Cheam Recreation Ground proved to be a success, with much greater space available.
The Rotary Club of Cheam organised the fun day and Club President Ron Daniels welcomed the new Mayor of Sutton Councillor Margaret Court to the event. President Ron said “It was wonderful to see so many local people once again enjoying Cheam Fair during a tough economic time. It wasn’t easy to keep the Fair going after the last two years but our lead organisers Geoff Coupe and Marcel Markan made sure that we did not hold back.”
Geoff Coupe added “Putting the Fair on is a lot of hard work, but having such a wonderful day makes it very satisfying. We were delighted that members from the now defunct Round Table joined us in making it such a success”. Roll on 2010!
As well as providing a fun day out, the Rotary Club of Cheam raised some £3000 for The Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton Shopmobility and Sutton & Croydon Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre. It’s thought that the local charities who took part raised a total of £3000. Marcel Markan said “This is Cheam Rotary at its best-putting the fun into fundraising!”
